addictive, tragic, heart-breaking, very cute at times

This book has become a favourite. Love the story. So tragic and annoying at the same time. You feel what Vera (protagonist) is feeling and there were times that she frustrated me; for not sticking up for herself or not saying why she was upset. But it does make sense later on in the story.

Vera and her relationship with the neighbour/best-friend seemed somewhat realistic. I could imagine Charlie Kahn as a person and why he did the things he did. Some things he did were confusing. He was self-absorbed, maybe it had to do with the drinking and getting high but at times he was so cruel that you begin to hate him and not care that he might need help. The chapter which explained how he died was heart-breaking. What a life the boy had and it ended without him really living.

A certain secondary character plays a significant role in Charlie’s life. That character was hard to imagine. We were told rather than shown the true extent of her character. If I had learnt more about her, I would have found it easy to believe her influence over Charlie.

I am trying not to spoil the story. Don’t be confused, just read it-if you’re interested, and you might see what I am talking about.
